Biography[]
Mick Callaghan arrived at Blackwall at some point between series 13 and series 14. He wears the helmet markings and shirt of a temporary/Acting Station Officer, but is never identified as such in dialogue. Despite being the senior officer on the watch, Mick lacked authority and treated the watch more like his friends than firefighters under his command. Frank Mooney regularly undermined his leadership; while both pumps were racing to a shout, Frank advised his crew to take a different route, directly defying Mick's orders. Frank was proved correct when his appliance reached the incident first. When Mick's crew finally arrived, he congratulated Frank for his handling of the situation.
Mick was married to Shauna and had a son, Liam. Shauna was unstable and a manic depressive, to which Mick was oblivious. She accidentally burned down their house after tampering with the electrics while trying to fix the heating. Mick had feelings for Sally Fields, which were mutual, however neither acted on it. Frank did sleep with Sally (and got her pregnant) and openly taunted Mick about it, aware of Mick's own feelings for her. Frank also had an affair with Shauna, who fell pregnant with his baby. Mick was delighted with the news but deep down, he knew the baby was Frank's. When Shauna learned that Sally was pregnant too, she suggested they swap babies, convinced that Sally's child had been fathered by Mick.
When Recall died after suffering a heart attack on a shout, Mick blamed himself. He had ignored Sally's warnings about Recall's failing health and allowed him to continue in the job without even insisting he pass a medical. At the hearing, Mick changed his statement and admitted culpability for Recall's death. To his surprise, DO Ross wouldn't hear of it, and maintained that Mick was not at fault. Mick also proved he could think quickly at an incident after saving the occupants of a car which had fallen in the Thames, for which he and Frank received the Queen's Gallantry Medal.
