Albert was the father of Sandra Hallam and father-in-law of John Hallam. He came to stay with his daughter and son-in-law, much to Hallam's annoyance, and immediately angered him by pulling up his prized viola wittrockiana flowers, which he insisted were weeds. Later, Albert was left to babysit his grandchildren while John and Sandra went for a night out, but when they came back, they found him on the sofa with an elderly woman named Edith, and John was irritated further by the prospect of her staying with them. Eventually, Albert and Edith 'eloped' to Edinburgh, after which Hallam was relieved to be rid of his father-in-law. However, Albert returned with Edith for a visit at Christmas, where he poured too much brandy on the Christmas pudding, causing Hallam's eyebrows to be burned off when he lit it.
